Sir Charles Eliot is magnificent. He writes about Hinduism and Buddhism like he is not at all biased. What he says here is what I like and I quote - If studying oriental religions sympathy and a desire to agree if possible are the first requisites. For instance, he who says of a cetain ideal "this means annihilation and I do not like it" is on the wrong way. The right way is to ascertain what many of our most intelligent brothers mean by cessation of mental activity and why it is for them an ideal. Sir C E goes about very broadly through the two religions and writes in a general way not going too deep in detail and thus makes the subject easy to understand for an ordinary reader.Product details

Perfect
GREAT
Used for research paper. Had a very broad information to compare each other. It gave a great details in each religion.
The author gets a bit too wordy and goes very deep into details that probably aren't all that useful to most readers. At the same time there is also much valuable information and it's an interesting book.
I give this book five stars just because of the amount of research that had gone into this books making. the writing is sincere and without any prejudices...great book
This book, more than any other documents the history of Buddhism and Hinduism - very realistically, placing it in the right context time and place wise. It also gives a good review of the two religions' thoughts and believes, including comparing them against one another. The following volumes were not quite as useful as the first one, which really carries you as you read. Highly recommended. The best of it all - free of charge!!
I bought this book to try out the download process, and when I opened it was pleasantly surprised to find a very readable work, old but scholastically impeccable. It will give you an interesting perspective on how we view Buddhism in today's world. Back when this book was written, Buddhism had not been widely introduced to the west, and we had not formed our preconceived notions yet about how we wanted to view Buddhism. This is a more detached view. Interesting.
