When a powerful, decisive aristocrat undertakes to protect an absent-minded young inventress from England's enemies, he finds his orderly world turned into chaos. Merlin Lambourne's stubborn dream of flight puts her at risk, not to mention driving Ransom crazy. In spite of himself, he's oddly enchanted by this muddled miss and her eccentric ways... but can he overcome his own fears and realize her invention may be the answer to saving both their lives?
A whimsical Regency-era tale of flying machines, fancy, and love among the hedgehogs.
Laura Kinsale personally chose the exceptional talent of Nicholas Boulton to narrate Midsummer Moon as a fully voiced audiobook, creating a unique work that brings all the life and color of the original to audio.
Midsummer Moon (Audible Audio Edition) Laura Kinsale Nicholas Boulton Hedgehog Inc Books
I LOVE Laura Kinsale. My one big regret is that she only wrote a few books, so I look forward to reading each one with delightful anticipation.I loved "Flowers from the Storm", "For My Lady's Heart", and "The Prince of Midnight" so much. They are among my favorite books.
So when the book starts and Ransom is standing at her door, thinking that he is meeting a man, and she comes to the door and hands him her hedgehog, I laughed out loud and thought: "Oh, this is going to be a great and funny book". But the only good part of the book was at the beginning. The rest went downhill and I was left really disappointed.
The book was a mish-mash of characters, all of whom were interesting, but we never really got to know them. When did Blythe fall in love with Quin and why didn't the author give us more detail? Same for Shelby and his ex-wife, who neatly reconciled at the end, without letting us see the plot line unfold.
The rest of the book was almost tedious, despite the duke being shot, and Merlin kidnapped three times. The plot seemed to go around in endless circles.
And Merlin was cute at the beginning but became tiresome quickly, with her character quirks and lack of the most basic communication skills. Another reviewer suggested that she might be autistic, which would explain a lot; but the romance was fragmented, and I could not understand why the duke was so besotted with her.
All in all, a big disappointment from my favorite author. Sigh...

Midsummer Moon (Audible Audio Edition) Laura Kinsale Nicholas Boulton Hedgehog Inc Books Reviews
Laura Kinsale books are never boring, never insult me with the common, never lack unusual love stories.
Midsummer Moon gives us Merlin and Ransom, the h and the H. Strong, determined characters that should be stiff but never are. Merlin invents-- well, "stuff" -- and Ransom dictates, as every good duke should. Complete opposites who bring out the sweetest in each other.
The humor of the book is wonderful. It's not the silly side-splitting kind, but the result of a gentle, exasperating interaction between two people-- one with her head in the clouds and the other with his feet firmly entrenched in the ground (and he doesn't want it any other way).
It's another wonderful book from a wonderful author!
This is the first book I've read by Laura Kinsale and she is one of my new favorite authors! Her writing is rich and complex and her use of language reminded me of a risque Georgette Heyer, though she doesn't need to be compared to anyone as her writing certainly stands on its own.
Merlin is a unique and enjoyable heroine to read about. I have a lot of absent-minded-professor types in my life and Kinsale has captured this personality type beautifully! Ransom is autocratic and manipulative, but his realization/confession at the end makes him more endearing. The secondary romance between Shelby and Jacqueline is sweet and the whole book is very satisfying. There's just enough adventure and angst to keep it interesting without being too stressful.
You will need to allow some creative license to go along with the science in this book, but the author notes at the end provide some justification for her choices. Her ideas are not completely far fetched. There is quite a bit of time spent working on Merlin's flying machine, so if science puts you to sleep, you may want to try a different Kinsale book instead. I personally enjoy reading about the scientific mind at work, and the psychology behind Kinsale's characters is very interesting. Excellent book that I would read again, and it's rich enough that I expect the second reading to reveal nuances I missed the first time.
I'm a big Lura Kinsale fan, and it routinely pains me that her novels are assigned to the "romance" genre, since I feel that most of them are so dense, and so emotionally demanding that they don't really count as romances. "Midsummer Moon" is, like all her books, well written. It also suffers from what I consider Kinsale's main writing flaw, namely, a problem of overly complicated plotting. But all potential readers should be forewarned that "Midsummer Moon" is a fairly typical historical romance. All Kinsale's heroines are unusual, but this heroine, Merlin, comes pretty close to being a typical "manic pixie dream girl", rather than being a wholly unique individual. The hero falls in love with her improbably quickly, again, unlike other Kinsale stories, and he fits the historical romance hero mold quite well. Since I enjoy historical romances, these features of the book are not insurmountable problems for me, and Kinsale does a wonderful job of creating a world of warmth, affection, and passion. But "Midsummer Moon" is not the genre buster that other Kinsale novels are - be forewarned.
I loved this story. Loved it! Not just a little, but over the moon loved it! Fun, romantic, sexy, poignant... I'm heartbroken that it's over.
I've read some reviews and it seems that Merlin, our 'genius with little common sense' heroine, grated on some people's nerves, but not mine. Oh, no. Not mine! I love her! In fact,I found her to be refreshingly unique, and she's now one of my all time favorite heroines. She and Ransom, so different, so completely and totally different... but absolutely brilliant together. They made me laugh, made me sigh, kept me listening through the wee hours of the morning.
Nicholas Boulton is an amazing narrator. I wish he'd narrate ALL audio books. Heck, I wish he'd narrate my name! Just my name... I'd play it over and over and over. Such a deep, rich, sexy voice.
*sigh* I'm just rambling, so I'll quit here, except to say that Laura Kinsale and Nicholas Boulton are, hands down, my favorite author/narrator team. I can't get enough of them, and I hope that he'll narrate all her books.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!
