"Bird Dog, this is Bat-21!" I remember having seen the movie that was based on this book in the 1980's and ran across this book while browsing here on Amazon and bought it. Glad I did. This is the story of the ordeal Iceal Hambleton, a Lt. Colonel in the USAF, who was navigator of an EB-66 electronic warfare aircraft shot down during the 1972 North Vietnam offensive. Hambleton, the lone survivor of his aircraft, parachuted into the midst of the NVA invasion of the south.
The Air Force and Hambleton began a physical and mental battle with the NVA who they had a grudging respect for. For twelve days, the US military both kept the communist Vietnamese from capturing Hambleton and planned a method of getting Hambleton out. Men died in the attempt to rescue Hambleton as jets, prop-driven aircraft as well as helicopters were employed to fight to keep Hambleton from the clutches of the NVA and some were lost in the attempt.
As a military history reader, I was impressed by the efficiency of USAF SAR (Search and Rescue) methods. "Gravel" was a weapon and technique I had never heard of. The use of "Sandies", jets, helicopters and small observation aircraft flown by FACs, or Forward Air Controllers, - even B-52s - all combined to keep the NVA back on their heels while Hambleton made his escape.
As a reader of adventure stories, I enjoyed the blood-and-guts story from Hambleton's point-of-view as he endured thirst, hunger, exhaustion and fear as he had to not only keep himself alive, but travel in the dead of night in an alien environment, surrounded by enemy territory and hundreds of enemy soldiers. All these enemy soldiers had but one task - capture him!
This isn't a long book, but it's a good one! the author explains that he had to alter a number of aspects of the story because many of the USAF's techniques are still classified. But, the author weaves a fine tale while changing only the minimum. This is a five star book that I enjoyed immensely.

BAT21 eBook William C Anderson Reviews
The book, and the act itself, are awesome. However, this book turned out to be a PUBLIC LIBRARY book!!!! What the hell...beware of this seller.
I've probably seen this movie at least 10 times over the years. It's a great movie but once again the book is even better. This guy is one tough SOB. I'm a year older than he was then and I'd hate to know I would have to go through half of what he did. Once again I'm proud to live in a country where so much is done to rescue one man.
It is hard to imagine a more risky job in the air war in Vietnam, alone in a slow small plane spotting for air strikes and ground force guns. If the enemy didn't get you you ran the risk of being hit by "friendly"fire ! The survival of Gene Hambleton shot down is down to sheer willpower and guts. This is another view of the Vietnam war that has never been viewed before, well worth reading
Breathtaking thriller based upon a true story of an Air Force pilot shot down in enemy territory. The book is frightening and believable. The injured pilot walked and hid in dangerous land with enemy forces actively looking for him! This book is a must read! Thanks to all who serve! I love this book, Thanks***
I hate to say I enjoyed the book because there is a lot of suffering that takes place in this survival story based on true events, so lets say I became wrapped up in the struggle and wanted to complete the book and get that poor navigator out of there ASAP and end his misery. I would have been more "on the edge of my seat" if I did not already know that he was eventually rescued and survived this ordeal. Even though I knew he would make it, the close encounters, the stealth, the support of the rescue teams, still provided a lot of tension for me. I could picture myself hiding out and then trying to make the escape to the rendezvous section. I could picture myself as one of the rescue team members, or as one of the FAC pilots, or one of the officers back at the base trying to figure a way to get this downed officer out of the bush, so it worked to keep me involved. As many know a movie of the same name was made. I did not see the movie, but if the movie moved along as the book does it must be pretty good. This is not 100% documentary of the actual story, but it is close enough to give you a good general idea of what these kinds of operations were all about and gives you a large dose of appreciation for those who served and sacrificed in these positions. Yes it was hollywooded up a bit in places, but it did not detract from the overall story.
This book was fairly well written and I enjoyed reading it. However, the formatting almost ruined it. Sentences would break in the middle and start a new paragraph. Scenes would change with no breaks or indications. The occasional open or close quote was missing. I've noticed formatting laziness with a lot of e-books, but this one was the worst. If you can get past this mess, you'll probably enjoy the book. It's a true story, mostly. I had some trouble building up a mental picture of "Bat-21's" predicament, and I think a crude map might have helped.
The story read a little slow. I already knew the rescue story and that part of the book was not accurate. Why no mention or credit to the 2 NAVY SEALS, both of whom, awarded Medal of Honor??? Instead - the supposed rescuer was a Marine recon officer? Not so! It wasn’t until end of book that author clarified that parts of book were fictional. I bought the book thinking it was the actual story of heroic Air Force officer and his Naby rescuers. Not quite. I didn’t give 1 star out of respect for the true story.
